Expertise

  • Benthic ecology; Macrozoobenthos; Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Under the marine plants and animals it hardly gives a Taxon, which would not be represented in the benthos. The macrozoobenthos, thus all macroscopically recognizable animals (> 2mm) at the bottom of the sea live, receive their food from the upper light-by-flooded layers of the sea. This bentho pelagic coupling in such a way specified is one of the most important processes in the global carbon cycle, since so the CO2 bound at the sea surface by photosynthesis is transported into the sediments at the bottom of the sea. At the boundary layer between water and sediment living animals catch particles from the water (suspension feeding) or collect sedimented material from the sediment surface (Deposit feeding) around itself to nourish. Their dismantling products deliver it into the water (resuspension) or on/into the sediment (deposition). My principal interest is appropriate 1., in the quantification of the carbon quantities by the life expressions of the animals into the sediments to be shipped, 2. like it this manages (feeding behaviour, "Autoecology") and 3. which effects their behavior on the environment has (e.g. sediment transport surrounding it; Sediment stabilization/destabilization). For this I examine individual species or in addition, biological communities (Biocenosis) in flow channels. For visualization and surface covering representation of the results in addition, for the definition of biological communities I use geographical information systems (GIS). These questions are also interesting in deep-sea environments, where I study partticle transport at seamounts. Details will follow.
